VIDEO: 'Lava bomb' injures 23 after hitting tour boat in Hawaii

State and federal investigations are underway after a Lava Ocean Tours vessel was pierced by what the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) has regarded as a "lava bomb."

Twenty-three people were injured in the incident, which occurred shortly after 6 a.m. (HST) on Monday.

The "lava bomb" reportedly showered the metal roof of an offshore vessel with molten lava, tearing a substantial hole through the ceiling and striking 23 members on board.

Despite the damage to the roof, the boat was able to return to its dock at Wailoa Small Boat Harbor in Hilo, where it was met by emergency personnel.

A 20-year-old girl suffered the most serious injury, which DLNR is describing as a traumatic leg injury.

Four other passengers were transferred to hospital by ambulance, while the rest either transported themselves in private vehicles or were treated on scene for minor injuries.

The "lava bomb" was a result of the Kilauea volcano, which has been erupting on the island since the beginning of March.
