Police are investigating following the death of a woman on the Barkerville Highway this week.
According to Quesnel RCMP, the road was shut down for several hours on Tuesday while police investigated a motor vehicle incident that resulted in the death of a pedestrian. The incident, occurred shortly after 7 pm when a privately-owned sand truck was driving east on the road.
It then struck a pedestrian who was walking eastbound near Drummond Road. the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
"At the time of the accident, the roads were wet due to light rain and there was no artificial lighting," said Sgt. Richard Weseen. "Witnesses reported that they had to swerve to avoid the female just prior to the collision."
The highway was detoured onto Schemenauer Road for four hours while police investigated.
At this point, the name of the pedestrian is not being released, though officers confirmed she was a Quesnel resident. The driver of the sand truck was not injured and alcohol or speed are not believed to be factors in the incident.
