4-month-old puppy named ‘Pebbles’ was so hungry she ate rocks: BC SPCA

The BC SPCA is now caring for a 4-month-old puppy, now fittingly named Pebbles, that was so hungry and neglected that she resorted to eating rocks.

According to the animal welfare organization, when the dog arrived at the vet she was “cold and motionless.” Pebbles was given fluids and was warmed up, at which point she started to raise her head and wag her tail.

However, after examining her abdomen, the vet became concerned. An x-ray confirmed that the tiny puppy had a belly full of rocks.

“Being the runt of her littler, poor Pebbles constantly lost the battle for her share of food, leading to malnourishment. Desperate for sustenance, Pebbles must have resorted to eating anything she could find, including rocks,” said the BC SPCA.

Pebbles was kept under close watch for several days in the ICU, and further x-rays showed that the rocks she ate were passing through her digestive system naturally.

Pebbles is recovering in her foster home, and is enjoying frequent small meals to help her digestion and gain some weight. Her foster family says she is confident and happy, barking and wagging her tail in joy at mealtimes.

The BC SPCA is accepting donations to help with her emergency vet care costs and daily care until she is ready to be adopted.
