UPDATE: 10-15 cm of snow expected for the Coquihalla, Connector and Hwy 3 tonight

(UPDATE: Mar. 22 @ 1:40 p.m.) - The snow has started to fall on B.C.'s mountain highway passes.

Following Wednesday's initial special weather alert, Environment Canada is now calling for 15 to 20 centimetres of snow for the Hwy 5 (the Coquihalla), Hwy 97C (the Connector) and Hwy 3.

"The passage of the cold front late this afternoon will bring a sudden change in precipitation from rain to heavy snow over the highways resulting in sudden reduced visibility and possible rapid accumulation of snow," the alert reads.

"Total snow accumulations of 10 to 15 cm are possible from this afternoon through tonight."

Due to higher freezing levels, the snow may become wet or mixed with rain at times and the roads could become quite slick late at night.

There are no highway closures at the moment, but NowMedia will continue to monitor the situation and provide information on any closures or delays.

(Original story: Mar. 21 @ 1 p.m.) - Spring weather may be out in full force at lower elevations, but winter conditions are expected to come back to the mountain highway passes on Thursday.

Environment Canada has issued multiple special weather alerts, covering Hwy 5 (the Coquihalla), Hwy 97C (the Connector) and Hwy 3.

The alert calls for a frontal wave to move across southern B.C. on Thursday, with a potent cold front arriving as early the afternoon.

“The passage of the cold front will result in a sudden change in precipitation from rain to heavy snow over the highways resulting in reduced visibility and possible rapid accumulation of snow,” the alert says.

“A rapid drop in temperature and snow level will also accompany the cold front.”

Travellers are advised to exercise caution if travelling late on Thursday and to be aware of changing road conditions.

You can get the most up to date conditions and information on potential closures on the DriveBC website.
