Where are you from and how long have you lived in Kamloops?

I was born in Hockenheim, Germany; moved to Winnipeg before grade 3, then moved to Kamloops for my grade 12 year. I've been here for nearly four years.

What is your favourite local store in Kamloops and why?
Ladies Only Fitness, not really a store but I love kickboxing there.

Describe yourself in one word.
Ambitious.

If you could go anywhere in the world right at this moment where would you go and why?
Asia. I've always loved travelling and from Asia I would have the ability to see so many of the incredible countries there and have easier access to get to Africa and Europe - other places that I want to explore more.

What is your favourite activity in Kamloops?
Hiking, kickboxing, and taking part in TRUSU clubs.

What is the most inspiring thing that has happened to you?

Last spring, I spoke on a panel themed on nursing leadership with four amazing nursing leaders who have inspired me beyond words. They shared their wisdom and encouraged my ambitions. They are the sort of leaders like whom I aspire to be.

Tell us your favourite childhood memory.
Spending time at our cabin out by Lake Winnipeg, especially when my friends would come. Fires, swimming in the lake, bike riding, and walking to the next camp for ice cream.

Where do you volunteer or give back to in the community?
Mostly through nursing organizations. I'm involved with the Canadian Nursing Students' Association. I work with my chapter at TRU to plan initiatives and events for nursing students on campus, and I work with the board of directors as the Community and Public Health Committee chair to try and raise awareness for and promote Public health. Other than that I've been involved with food banks in Kamloops and Winnipeg and various other organizations. Some wonderful organizations at which I've enjoyed being for clinical are the Chris Rose center and Family Tree in Kamloops.

If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?
I would love to see people care more for the environment and take seriously the threat of climate change and the recent UN report on human effects on earth's ecology. Moreover, I would stop the horrendous attacks on individuals for their faith, ethnicity, sexuality, sex, and gender spurred by hate.

Where would you sneak away to in Kamloops to spend some time alone?
Kenna Cartwright Park. I love going in to the park deep enough so you can't hear or see the city anymore and feel like you're in the middle of nowhere.

Where would you like to see positive change in Kamloops and why?

I would like to see the transit system coordinated so that busing becomes accessible for more of the city, to decrease single occupant vehicle use. Moreover, the recyling system could be changed to reflect Burnaby or Kelowna, increasing sustainability.

What do you think makes Kamloops great?
The topography, the local businesses, they strive to become sustainable, and our university.

Tell us something that not everyone may know about you.
I love astronomy and learning about stars, planets, black holes, and outer space...

How do people connect with you, personally, through social media?
@jessguthier.

What do you always find yourself saying?
"This will work out" or "There's always something fantastic around the corner."

Tell us your best piece of life advice.

Don't let other people tell you who to be, and likewise, don't tell other people who to be.

If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select?
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. I think she's phenomenal and a great inspiration to remind people that you should never accept a broken system but should fight to change it. Neil deGrasse Tyson, I admire him how he's made science accessible for so many more people and I think he's a great author - I really enjoy reading his books.

Why do you think it is important to shop locally?
To reduce your ecological footprint and support small business owners over large corporations.

What has been your proudest accomplishment?
Becoming elected as the Community and Public Health Committee chair of the Canadian Nursing Students' Association.

Some general comments I would like to share are:
Create a world in which you want to live. Be accepting of others but not apathetic to injustice.
