While the majority of Canadians scoff at Donald Trump’s recent discourse about Canada becoming the 51st state, some are a little more intrigued by the idea.
A new Research Co. poll has found that just over a quarter of Canadians (26%) think their province would be better off joining the United States and becoming an American state.
This is an eight-point increase from when the polling company conducted a similar survey in October 2023.

The idea, inspired by recent troll comments by president-elect Trump, resonates most in Alberta (30%), followed by Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario (29% each).
Respondents in Quebec and Atlantic Canada supported the idea equally (24%), while British Columbians are least in favour of joining the US (18%).
“The appeal of a province joining the United States varies greatly by age,” explained Mario Canseco, president of Research Co.
“While only 10% of Canadians aged 55 and over perceive benefits, the proportion rises to 27% among those aged 35-to-54 and to 40% among those aged 18-to-34.”
Leaving Canada is still not the preferred option for the majority of Canadians, but the poll does showcase the current level of discontent with Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government.
According to the Research Co., more than 60% of Canadians believe their province would be better off with a different prime minister in Ottawa.
That number jumps to over two-thirds of residents in Alberta and Ontario, while BC, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Quebec and Atlantic Canada all fall between 53-64%.
And it’s not just at the federal level, as 57% of Canadians, ranging from 65% in Ontario to 47% in BC, feel their province would be better off with a different premier at the helm.
