Chrystia Freeland has chosen to resign rather than assume another position in Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s cabinet.
Freeland, who has served as Canada’s minister of finance since August 2020, announced her decision through a social media post Monday morning.
She revealed the news by sharing the resignation letter she penned to the prime minister, which said it has been “the honour of (her) life” to serve Canadians.

“On Friday, you told me you no longer want me to serve as your finance minister and offered me another position in the cabinet,” the letter said.
“Upon reflection, I have concluded that the only honest and viable path is for me to resign from the cabinet.”
She spoke of being “at odds” with Trudeau about the best path forward for Canada in recent weeks.
“To be effective, a minister must speak on behalf of the prime minister and with his full confidence,” the letter explained.
“In making your decision, you made it clear that I no longer credibly enjoy that confidence and possess the authority that comes with it.”
While she has resigned from Trudeau’s cabinet, Freeland said she’ll continue to serve as a Liberal Member of Parliament and is committed to running again in the next federal election.
