Four out of five people say Canada should do more to honour veterans: Poll

Remembrance Day is fast approaching, and while many Canadians will take the time to reflect on the sacrifices made by the men and women in the Armed Forces, a new study shows that many think more should be done.

A poll from the non-profit Angus Reid Institute recently found that one-in-four Canadians say they’ll attend a formal service on November 11, while the same number say they might.

The vast majority (80%) of citizens also say that Canada should do more to honour veterans.

Veterans are commonly celebrated with Armed Forces nights at NHL hockey games and other events. An Afghanistan memorial was unveiled this year as well at the National Defence headquarters.

However, it appears Canadians would like the country to think more often about those who have served and lost their lives.

This could also speak to the sentiment that Canada needs to take better care of veterans.

In January, the Canadian government was accused of knowingly short-changing hundreds of thousands of disabled veterans and RCMP members by about $165 million in benefits.

As many as 270,000 veterans and others receiving a disability pension or benefits were short-changed until 2010, when the mistake was discovered. As many as 120,000 people affected may have died without receiving any of the owed money.
