A petition created by a BC woman calling on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to revoke billionaire Elon Musk of his Canadian citizenship is picking up steam, and it's now been endorsed by NDP MP Charlie Angus.
Musk, who was born in Pretoria, South Africa, has Canadian citizenship due to his mother being from Regina, Sask. The Tesla CEO and head of DOGE also has US citizenship.
The petition, launched by Qualia Reed of Nanaimo, has over 200,000 signatures.
It calls upon the prime minister to revoke Musk’s dual citizenship on the grounds that he has “engaged in activities that go against the national interest of Canada,” and has “used his wealth and power to influence our elections.”
In addition, the petition refers to recent attacks towards the country by the US President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly expressed his desire to make Canada the 51st state.
“He has now become a member of a foreign government that is attempting to erase Canadian sovereignty,” the petition continues.
In a post made on Blue Sky, Angus cited a case in Canada involving a German-born man named Ernst Zündel, who published and distributed Holocaust denial literature. He was eventually deported back to Germany in 2005 after being deemed a threat to national security.
“This grassroots initiative has exploded in just a few days. Now the UK media are covering it. Musk is a fascist threat to democracy. We kicked out Ernst Zundel, Musk is just as bad,” the MP said.
The petition says it is open until June 20, 2025, but Angus has said he will present it to Parliament in March. The House of Commons is scheduled to resume sitting on March 24, 2025.
