Canadians have more faith in the Conservatives than any other party when it comes to managing the nation’s finances, a new poll suggests.
Nanos’s survey, conducted between March 31 and April 1, found that 35 per cent of respondents trusted the Tories to “responsibly manage the finances of the Government of Canada.”
Just 19 per cent backed the Liberals, while 10 per cent said they’d put their faith in the NDP.
More people – 21 per cent – said they trusted no party to manage Canada’s finances than said they backed the governing Liberals.
When Nanos last asked this question in a survey, in February 2023, the Tories had a much slimmer lead over the Liberals – 28 per cent to 22 per cent.
In April 2021, the Liberals led the Conservatives 28 per cent to 23 per cent.
Nanos said its survey, which was commissioned by CTV News, was based on responses from 1,069 Canadian adults. They were chosen at random and completed the survey both online and over the phone.
In recent months Pierre Poilievre, the leader of the Conservative Party, has attacked the Liberal Party for its spending on the ArriveCan app and also pledged to cut spending on the likes of the CBC.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, on the other hand, has accused Poilievre of planning to cut funding for social programs on which he says Canadians rely.
Trudeau has also recently announced numerous new spending plans, particularly related to housing.
In a separate Nanos survey released this week, the pollster said the Conservatives’ lead over the Liberals has shrunk from 20 points to 12.
According to that poll, the Tories are backed by 38 per cent of voters, while the Liberals have the support of 26 per cent.
The NDP, meanwhile, was favoured by 19 per cent of respondents.
