Local interior designer offers tips to create a modern, Nordic style home

Nordic design has inspired homes for years, especially in Scandinavia, where it originated. More recently, this minimalistic style has quickly gained popularity across North America — and with good reason.

A Nordic home combines modern and natural aesthetics, and often incorporates elements of the Scandinavian lifestyle, such as the Danish concept of hygge (roughly translating to coziness) and the Swedish concept of lagom (roughly translating to finding balance).

Scandinavians are known as some of the happiest people in the world, so it’s not surprising that we are interested in practicing some of their methods in our own homes.

“Creating a Nordic home really consists of 5 elements: light paint and flooring, neutral colour pallet, clean lines, natural textures and wood and metal finishes,” said Danielle Ursulan, owner of Ulla Interiors.

We spoke with Ursulan to gain some insight into this trend, using a home that she styled right here in Kelowna along with DK Modern Furniture as an example. Here are some tips on how to incorporate this Scandinavian feel in your own home.

Neutral palettes with bright accents

A neutral palette offers versatility, and whites and grays are especially popular in Nordic style. Add some brightness with colourful accent pieces such as pillows, artwork and plants.

Blues and yellows are a great choice, or whatever colour brings you happiness. Candles are another great decor choice as they also offer soft light and pleasant smells.

Simplicity

Minimalism is more than just a design trend — it’s a way of life. Nordic style homes are organized and clutter-free, and every piece has a purpose and adds value to the space.

Curate a space with quality furniture and decor that you love, rather than making purchases on a whim and winding up with a bunch of items that do not serve you or your home.

When we asked Ursulan about her favourite piece in this home, she pointed out the Parry Chair from Mobital.

“The gray tweed with the wood base is a fantastic combination,” said Ursulan.

Incorporating practical items with multiple functions is also a great way to save space and simplify your home. This is especially true if you live in a smaller dwelling, like a condo.

Modern meets organic

“With a Nordic style it is important to keep lots of natural textures, lots of raw wood and a fairly neutral pallet,” said Ursulan. “I think the mixture of contemporary furniture and the natural textures create a very unique space.”

“All of the furniture I chose I tried to keep with a natural theme; solid teak stumps, linen bed frames, wool rugs, walnut tables, cowhides — all of these elements create a really organic feel,” added Ursulan.

Tech-free areas

It seems like we are always plugged in these days. Creating a comfortable, personalized space in your home that is free of electronics means that you’ll always have a place to go to relax, regroup and enjoy the present moment.

Nordic style represents simplicity — creating this aesthetic in your home, however, is not necessarily so simple. Choosing the right combination of patterns, textures and colours and creating a space that offers both form and function can be challenging.

Luckily, customers at DK Modern Furniture receive a free design consultation from Ulla Interiors. Shop their selection of high-quality, European-inspired pieces with the help of a professional, and create a space that you love coming home to.
