Donald Trump has issued a sharp rebuke to Mark Carney following the prime minister’s speech at the World Economic Forum yesterday.
“Canada lives because of the United States,” the president told the audience in Davos, Switzerland, in reference to defence.
He added: “Remember that, Mark, the next time you make your statements.”
Trump said Carney was “not so grateful” in his speech at the same podium on Tuesday.
Carney, referencing the illusions of communism, damned the US-crafted post-Second World War order in his speech, explaining that the “fiction was useful.”
He added: “American hegemony, in particular, helped provide public goods: open sea lanes, a stable financial system, collective security and support for frameworks for resolving disputes.
“So, we placed the sign in the window. We participated in the rituals. And we largely avoided calling out the gaps between rhetoric and reality.
“This bargain no longer works.”
In reference to Canada’s relationship with the US, Carney also said: “You cannot ‘live within the lie’ of mutual benefit through integration when integration becomes the source of your subordination.”
