Several brands of fresh-cut fruit recalled due to salmonella risk

Various brands of fresh-cut fruit have been recalled due to a possible salmonella contamination.

Health Canada said Fresh Start Foods, Ready-Set-Serve by Markon, GFS, Kitchen Essentials and Central Foods Co. are among the brands affected.

The fruit were sold in British Columbia, Alberta and Manitoba, though Health Canada also warned they may have been distributed elsewhere in Canada too.

Anyone in possession of a recalled product should throw it away or return it to the location at which it was bought.

Pineapples, watermelons and cantaloupes are among the fruits included in the recall.

Health Canada’s notice, which was posted on Sunday, comes after a BC Centre of Disease Control warning issued earlier this month about confirmed cases of salmonella linked to a different brand of cantaloupes.

“Food contaminated with salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick,” Health Canada explained.

“Young children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems may contract serious and sometimes deadly infections. Healthy people may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. Long-term complications may include severe arthritis.”
