5 things you need to know this morning: Dec. 2, 2025

Start your day off right with five things you need to know this morning.

Five things you need to know

1. Elizabeth May says voting for Carney budget was a 'mistake'

Elizabeth May has already changed her tune on voting for the Liberal government's budget last month, with the Green Party leader now saying it was a "mistake." She said Mark Carney's memorandum of understanding with Alberta regarding an oil pipeline to the BC coast was a "significant betrayal and a reversal," adding: "I don't know if the prime minister lied, but I think he needs to consider what his word means when his word was given."

2. Liberals down 15 points in Metro Vancouver in first post-MOU poll

Meanwhile, in the first major poll taken since Mark Carney's announcement of the pipeline deal with Alberta, it seems the Liberals have already lost some support in British Columbia. A new Angus Reid Institute survey reckons the Grits are 15 points down in Metro Vancouver; confusingly, however, the biggest beneficiary has been the pro-oil pipeline Conservative Party (up six points).

3. RCMP limiting use of Chinese drones due to 'high security risks'

The RCMP has revealed it is now limiting its use of nearly 1,000 Chinese-made drones because they present "high security risks, primarily due to their country of origin." Chinese drones make up about 80 per cent of the RCMP's drone fleet, but replacing them would cost more than $30 million.

4. Franklin publisher condemns US war secretary's use of turtle character in 'narco terrorist' meme

The publisher of the Franklin children's books – which concern the adventures of a young turtle – has condemned US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth for posting an image showing the amphibian wielding a bazooka and targeting "narco terrorists." "Franklin the Turtle is a beloved Canadian icon who has inspired generations of children and stands for kindness, empathy, and inclusivity," Kids Can Press said in response, adding: "We strongly condemn any denigrating, violent, or unauthorized use of Franklin’s name or image, which directly contradicts these values."

5. Costco sues US government over Trump tariffs

Costco is gunning for the Trump administration: the retail giant has sued the US government in an effort to obtain a full refund of import duties it has paid in the event the Supreme Court rules against the president's tariff regime. In its suit, Costco said it had suffered because of the tariffs, which have made imports more expensive in the US.
