5 things you need to know this morning: Feb. 23, 2021

Start your day off right with five things you need to know this morning.

Five things you need to know

1. Stunning footage of Mars landing released

NASA has released remarkable footage taken by its Perseverance rover, which successfully landed on Mars last week. The clips include the final minutes of the robot's landing on the Red Planet. NASA also released sound recordings of the Martian surface.

2. Father-to-be killed while assembling device for gender-reveal party

A father-to-be has died after the "freakiest of freak accidents" involving a device he was assembling for his unborn child's gender-reveal party. Christopher Pekny, who was 28, was setting up the equipment in Liberty, New York when it reportedly exploded and killed him.

3. England could be completely free of COVID-19 restrictions by summer

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has unveiled plans to potentially lift all COVID-19 restrictions in England by June 21. The country, which has suffered badly during the pandemic, will begin its march towards freedom on March 8. It comes as the UK surges ahead in the global vaccination race.

4. Facebook to restore news content to Australia

Facebook has said it will restore the ability to post news in Australia. It comes after the American giant was accused of abusing its power when it banned all news from the platform for Australian users on Thursday. Facebook made the decision because the Australian government is debating legislation designed to make US tech companies pay something for the journalism that has helped make them so dominant.

5. Elon Musk falls off top spot in global wealth rankings

Elon Musk is apparently no longer the richest man in the world. It comes after his car company, Tesla, suffered huge losses in the stock market on Monday. That means Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is back on top of the rich list with an estimated $186.3 billion fortune. Musk will now be forced to make do with a paltry $183 billion.
