5 things you need to know this morning: July 16, 2025

Start your day off right with five things you need to know this morning.

Five things you need to know

1. Vandals who cut down Sycamore Gap tree get 4 years in jail

Daniel Graham and Adam Carruthers, both in their 30s, have been sentenced to four years in jail for what a prosecutor called a “moronic mission.” The men cut down England’s beloved Sycamore Gap tree in 2023, causing it to topple onto and damage the ancient Hadrian’s Wall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

2. Tropical system poses serious flood risk to Florida, Gulf Coast

There’s growing concern for another significant rain and flooding event that could batter Florida and the Gulf Coast this week. The system could become Tropical Storm Dexter, the fourth named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season and a mark not usually seen until mid-August, if it musters a more defined centre of circulation.

3. Search continues for missing Nova Scotia children missing since early May

Police provided an update this morning on the search for Lilly and Jack Sullivan. The children, ages six and four, were reported missing on May 2 in Lansdowne Station, Nova Scotia. The RCMP says it has received over 600 public tips and reviewed roughly 5,000 video files during the 11 week search, and have formally interviewed more than 60 people. A cash reward is being offered for information about the case.

4. NL beats AL in MLB All-Star Game that needed swing-off after 9-inning tie

It was an exciting MLB All-Star Game in Atlanta on Tuesday night. The National League took a 6-0 lead before the American League came storming back to tie the game in the ninth inning. Instead of extra innings, the game was settled with a swing-off, or a mini home run derby, that saw Kyle Schwarber be the NL hero and earn MVP honours.

5. Australia’s ‘Outback Killer’ dies without revealing where victim’s body is

Bradley John Murdoch, known as the “Outback Killer,” died in Australia on Tuesday. He was convicted of the 2001 murder of 28-year-old Peter Falconio in 2005 and has never revealed the whereabouts of the British backpacker’s body. Police called it “deeply regrettable” that Murdoch took that secret to the grave and said his silence “denied the Falconio family the closure they have so long deserved.”
