Five things you need to know

1. Carney warns 'values' under attack as nation celebrates Canada Day

Patriots across the country celebrated Canada Day yesterday as Prime Minister Mark Carney warned that "our values are being tested by attacks on democracy and freedoms — attacks that we must resist." In Ottawa, meanwhile, the King's brother, Edward, told the crowd: "Today is truly a celebration of you, and your home and your land, strong and free."

2. 'Diddy' found guilty of transportation to engage in prostitution, not guilty of sex trafficking

The musician Sean "Diddy" Combs has been found guilty of transportation to engage in prostitution by a court in the US. But the mogul was found not guilty of racketeering and sex trafficking. He could ultimately spend up to 10 years in prison.

3. Guilbeault notes 'renewed sense of pride' in Canada, but refuses to define Canadian identity

The federal minister for identity and culture has said there's been a "renewed sense of pride in being Canadian" amid hostile language coming from the US president. But Steven Guilbeault added: "It would be pretty rich for one member of cabinet sitting in Ottawa to tell all of Canada, 'This is what Canadian identity should look like.' That's not how I roll."

4. BC man struggling on Canada Day after being 'horrified' by response to Ottawa trucker protest

The CBC has published a column written by a BC man who feels betrayed and alienated by Canada because of the Liberal government's response to the Ottawa trucker protests in 2022. Gord Larson, who now lives in Calgary, said he was "horrified" by the Trudeau government's response, which he described as "naked authoritarianism."

5. Trump says Israel has agreed to 60-day ceasefire in Gaza

The world is waiting for confirmation after US President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social that Israel has agreed to a 60-day ceasefire in Gaza. Trump said he hopes Hamas, the terror group that runs Gaza, "takes this deal, because it will not get better — IT WILL ONLY GET WORSE."
