Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is coming to the G7 meeting in Kananaskis later this month after accepting Canada's invitation. Modi said he wants Canada and India, whose relationship has been strained recent years, to work together with "renewed vigour," while Mark Carney said the countries had "deep people-to-people ties and significant commercial links."

As well as trying to patch things up with India, the PM has also been attempting to charm China. Carney's office said the Liberal leader has spoken with Chinese Premier Li Qiang about improving communication between the countries, battling the fentanyl crisis and resolving trade disputes.

In yet more Carney news, the Liberal government is set to table its centrepiece legislation on internal trade as early as today. The prime minister promised, in his words, to create a single economy in Canada rather than 13 by July 1.

Ottawa continues to keep its elbows firmly down after the US doubled its tariffs on steel and aluminum to 50 per cent earlier this week. It comes amid widespread speculation that Carney and Donald Trump are close to a deal, but Industry Minister Mélanie Joly refused to answer a question about work on an agreement.

There's no sign of reconciliation today after Donald Trump and Elon Musk's blockbuster break-up went public on Thursday. The White House said Trump has no plans to speak with Musk, who yesterday attacked the president for his association with child rapist Jeffrey Epstein.
