Start your day off right with five things you need to know this morning.

Five things you need to know

1. Riots break out in several cities across the US in response to George Floyd's death

Protests have started to erupt in several US cities as people demand justice for George Floyd, who was killed while in police custody in Minneapolis. Riots have started Minneapolis, Los Angeles and Memphis as hundreds of people gathered in a call for justice over the death of George Floyd, who suffocated when he was handcuffed and pinned to the ground by a Minneapolis police officer on May 26. Support from the National Guard was requested in Minneapolis to combat looting and rioting amid the protests.

2. US declares Hong Kong is no longer politically autonomous from China

The US has declared that Hong Kong is no longer autonomous from China, “given facts on the ground,” meaning it no longer has the freedom to govern itself. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo made the announcement on Wednesday. The news has potentially huge ramifications for both mainland China and Hong Kong, and comes a day before Beijing is expected to pass the controversial national security law that would curtail civil liberties in Hong Kong.

3. China rejects request from the US for meeting about Hong Kong

China has rejected a request from the US to meet regarding the situation in Hong Kong, following the recent escalation in tensions in the city over a Beijing-proposed national security legislation. China said it "categorically rejects the baseless request," adding that the legislation for Hong Kong is “purely China's internal affairs."

4. England and Scotland launch track and tracing systems for COVID-19

In England, thousands of people have been recruited to help track people who have been exposed to the coronavirus. Scotland has also launched a system, Northern Ireland has a program and Wales will launch theirs in June.

5. U.S. deaths from coronavirus have passed 100,000 in under four months

The US has recorded 100,000 deaths in under four months, marking more than double the number of reported deaths of any other nation.
