5 things you need to know this morning: Oct. 7, 2025

Start your day off right with five things you need to know this morning.

Five things you need to know

1. Israelis mourn on 2nd anniversary of October 7 massacre

Israelis are mourning on the second anniversary of the October 7 massacre, which was led by Islamist terror group Hamas in 2023. About 1,200 people, mostly civilians, were slaughtered in southern Israel during the atrocity, prompting retaliation from the victim nation that continues to this day. In a statement released this morning, Mark Carney condemned the attacks in Canada's name, adding: "Canada has committed more than $400 million in assistance to the West Bank and Gaza, and we support the sustained, large-scale delivery of humanitarian aid into the region."

2. Carney to sit down with Trump in White House once again

Today's the day: Mark Carney is set to appear in front of the cameras in the White House for another sit-down with President Donald Trump. Carney had previously said Canada and the US would agree a new trading arrangement in the summer, but missed his own deadline by several months. The meeting comes just days after Trump repeated his desire to see Canada become part of the United States. Carney, meanwhile, mocked the president's knowledge of economics in an interview with The Economist set to be released later this week.

3. Renewables overtake coal for 1st time in history as China leads charge

A think tank reckons the world used more renewable energy than coal this year for the first time in history. Ember highlighted China's rapid expansion of renewables and the US and EU's expansion of fossil fuels, though in reality China is still the country responsible for the most CO2 emissions in the world by a very large margin.

4. Freedom Convoy organizers to learn their fate today

Two of the organizers of the 2022 Freedom Convoy protest in Ottawa are finally set to learn what their punishment will be after being found guilty of mischief. The Crown has requested that Tamara Lich and Chris Barber be jailed for seven and eight years, respectively.

5. Chinese carmaker delights in 880% surge in UK sales

Chinese electric car giant BYD has announced that the UK has become its biggest market outside of China, with sales surging 880 per cent year-over-year in September. The UK, unlike Canada and the EU, refused to follow the US's lead in applying tariffs on Chinese EVs, making the market attractive to China's exporters.
