Five things you need to know

1. Some Canadians emptying savings accounts to pay for private surgery

With wait times in many provinces intolerably long, some Canadians are emptying their savings accounts to pay for private surgery. One woman, an 83-year-old from Calgary, said she waited two years for knee surgery before giving up and spending her retirement savings – $33,000 – to pay for the procedure at a private clinic in Toronto.

2. Mark Carney spotted taking part in forest trail race

Prime Minister Mark Carney, meanwhile, has been enjoying a jog. The Canadian leader surprised many onlookers when he was spotted taking part in the Haliburton Forest Trail Race in Southern Ontario this weekend. Carney finished 58th out of 120 runners in the 26-kilometre race.

3. EV drivers remain committed to their tech after Carney announcement

Some electric vehicle drivers have said the Liberals' decision to pause the federal mandate on the sale of EVs doesn't change their view of the technology, but they do fear it could herald a slower rollout of charging stations. "I'm not worried about the infrastructure growing," Angie Thomas, secretary of the board of the Electric Vehicle Association of Alberta, explained. "But I do worry about future charging projects coming."

4. Dix praises BC's EV uptake, says 'issue here in Canada ... is first and foremost with Ontario'

In more EV news, British Columbia Energy Minister Adrian Dix has blamed the Carney government's decision to pause its EV mandate policy on the province of Ontario. Praising BC's uptake of EVs – 20.7 per cent of new vehicle purchases in 2024 – he said: "The issue here in Canada -- and I think the federal government needs to engage in this a little bit -- is first and foremost with Ontario."

5. Hamas praises mass murder in Jerusalem

There's been another mass murder in Israel, with this time two Palestinian gunmen blamed for murdering six people and wounding eight others. Among those murdered in Jerusalem, the Israeli capital, was a 60-year-old woman. The atrocity has been praised by Hamas.
