Interior search and rescue crew saves family of 5 disoriented near Mica Mountain

South Cariboo Search and Rescue put their training to the test this week when looking for a lost family of five near Mica Mountain.

According to the group, just after 7 pm, they were called to locate the family who become disoriented while snowmobiling in the snowmobile park area. Due to worsening weather conditions, SCSAR chose to act immediately to give them the best chance of saving the group.

This snowmobile group was experienced and carried necessary safety equipment with them, including an INREACH device.

"The group used the INREACH device to text a family member to let them know they'd become disoriented in the falling snow/rain conditions and decided to hunker down while attempting to light a fire," wrote the group.

"This proved difficult with the weather conditions. As a result, the family member then notified a member of SCSAR directly, who then contacted RCMP as they can request authorization for a search to be completed through Emergency Management BC."

SCSAR was able to pinpoint the group's location with a GPS and found them just before 5 am the next day. They were then assisted off the mountain without issues.

"By carrying proper safety equipment and using it effectively, which was the case in this incident, Search and Rescue can respond quickly to these types of events."

No injuries were reported. Good job SCSAR.
