Kootenay man attempts to evade police by pedalling away

With the sun shining and the temperatures warming up, BC locals are dusting off their bikes, including a man with an outstanding warrant in the community of Trail.

On April 16, a frontline officer from the Trail and Greater District RCMP was conducting a routine patrol when he observed a man riding a bicycle into oncoming traffic without a helmet or reflectors.

Police then saw the 31-year-old ride through a red light and decided to detain him roadside.

“The officer activated his emergency lights and sirens, however, the man did not stop for the officer,” wrote Sgt. Mike Wicentowich in a news release.

“The man rode onto a sidewalk and attempted to pedal away from the officer but crashed his bike. The officer exited his vehicle and approached the man while identifying himself. The man, disoriented from the crash, attempted to get onto his bicycle and ride away.”

Police prevented the man from leaving and arrested him for “obstructing a police officer” and a struggle ensured.

A second officer arrived at the scene and took the man into custody without further incident.

RCMP then learned the man had an outstanding warrant of arrest and a small amount of a substance believed to be drugs was discovered in the incident.

When the news release was published on April 16, the man was in police custody and awaiting a bail hearing before a judge.
