A fatal crash on the Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1) earlier this week claimed the lives of an elderly couple from the Shuswap.
Emergency crews responded to the crash at the intersection of Hwy 1 and Malakwa Road, east of Sicamous, around 2 pm on Tuesday, April 15.
The crash happened on a four-lane divided section of highway and involved an SUV and semi truck towing a trailer, the Sicamous RCMP explained.
“The investigation determined that the driver of (the) Suzuki SUV attempted to cross the westbound lanes of Hwy 1 from Malakwa Road in order to turn left and proceed east on Hwy 1,” said the RCMP release.
Unfortunately, police say the driver “failed to yield” to the westbound semi, which resulted in the fatal collision.
The 76-year-old Salmon Arm man behind the wheel of the SUV and his 73-year-old spouse were killed in the crash. The driver of the semi was uninjured.
The RCMP noted that road conditions were “clear and dry” at the time of the collision.
