Missing BC toddler found after walking 5 km into the wilderness

A number of people jumped into action on Wednesday afternoon after it was reported that a two-year-old boy had gone missing in the wilderness around Beaverdell.

Multiple search and rescue agencies, the RCMP, conservation officers, friends and family all took to the woods to find the toddler, who disappeared around noon.

“A dozen members responded, including three spotters in a helicopter,” said a release from Central Okanagan Search and Rescue. “Other members arrived ready to search using quads, kayaks or on foot.”

Before long, the search also included a fixed-wing aircraft and multiple helicopters as people frantically searched the woods for the missing toddler.

The RCMP's police dog unit was also brought in to try and track down the youngster.

Thankfully, after a three hour search, the toddler was found by his uncle at the 8 km mark of Beaver Creek Road shortly before 4 pm.

According to COSAR, it’s believed that the toddler ended up walking around 5 km along quad trails and logging roads over the three hours that he was missing.

The RCMP confirmed that the boy wandered "several kilometers from where he was last seen."

“Amazingly, the boy was seemingly uninjured during the ordeal," said Cst. Solana Paré of the Kelowna RCMP. "He was safely reunited with the rest of his family a short time later.”

It must have been quite the adventure for the two-year-old boy, but thankfully there was a positive ending.
