Okanagan bar not changing beer taps despite ‘hurtful and threatening’ messages

Owners of an Enderby pub are standing their ground, choosing to keep a set of beer taps that have drummed up quite the reaction from some.

The Small Axe Roadhouse repurposed a pair of mannequins to serve as beer taps, with the taps coming out from the nipples.

The mannequin taps, which are outfitted with jean vests and hats, have prompted some negative comments and messages, which the owners say have been “hurtful and threatening.”

“Many folks have mansplained to us that we are sexist, misogynistic and wrong for having these beautiful, functional works of art put in the business,” explained a post on the bar’s Facebook page from earlier this week.

“People won’t agree all the time and that is fine, but there’s a way to express your views without being cruel, threatening and potentially trying to end a business that employs many good folks in these nutty times.”

The post added that the new taps were never meant to offend or hurt anyone and the bar apologizes for anyone who’s been offended by them.

“We are tolerant, accepting, full-of-love people who love beer and feeling empowered and are comfortable with our bodies and the female form,” it explained.

“It legit does not go any further than that.”

Although there’s been negative messages about the tap, there was an outpouring of support in the comment section of the Facebook post.

“I love the taps,” wrote one woman. “The whole family loves eating the yummy food from there. We love your atmosphere! Just keep doing your awesome thing.”

Another wrote: “Whatever, they are awesome. For every one person who calls you down, there are 10 more backing you!”

“You may lose a customer for the taps, but now you just gained one for sticking up for yourselves,” said another man. “Good job! I’ll make sure I get there soon to try your restaurant.”

You know what they say, all publicity is good publicity.
