Vehicle found in Kootenay River, remains inside believed to be man missing since 2004

The search for a missing man in the Kootenays appears to be over after more than two decades.

George Frank Davis, who went by his middle name, was reported missing in the Creston area on July 29, 2004.

His case remained a mystery for 22 years until the Adventures With Purpose volunteer search and recovery dive team found a fully-submerged vehicle in the Kootenay River on Sept. 24, 2026.

According to police, the team had been assisting Davis’ family in the search and the vehicle, found near a location commonly known as the “Old Ferry Landing,” had human remains inside.

Investigators determined the vehicle’s description and license plate matched the 1981 Chrysler Lebaron that was associated with Davis.

The RCMP Underwater Recovery Team was called to assist with the recovery of the vehicle on Sept. 28, 2026.

Police say the identity of the deceased has not yet been formally confirmed and is pending forensic analysis and confirmation through the BC Coroners Service.

However, based on the vehicle and circumstances of the recovery, investigators believe the remains are those of Davis.

At this time, the missing man’s death is not believed to be suspicious and no foul play is suspected, but the probe remains ongoing and will wait on the BC Coroners Service results.

Davis was 40 years old when he went missing and would have been 62 years old today.
