401 new COVID-19 cases in the BC Interior over 5 days since last IH update

Another 401 cases of COVID-19 have been identified in the BC Interior since the health authority last provided an update on Thursday, April 1.

That’s an average of 80 new cases per day, with the following breakdown:

• Thursday to Friday - 78 new cases
• Friday to Saturday - 66 new cases
• Saturday to Sunday - 62 new cases
• Sunday to Monday - 89 new cases
• Monday to Tuesday - 106 new cases
  

Today’s total of 106 new cases is the sixth highest single-day total for Interior Health, the highest since there were 110 new cases on Jan. 22.

Currently, there are 678 active cases in the BC Interior, which is an increase of 200 since last Tuesday and twice as many active cases as there were two weeks ago.

Twenty-one people are currently in IH hospitals with COVID-19 and eight of them are in critical care.

There has been one additional death over the past five days, bringing the region’s death toll to 116.

Here’s an update on the health authority’s currently active outbreaks:

• Cottonwoods Care Centre long-term care in Kelowna has 28 cases: 25 residents and three staff.
• Kelowna General Hospital
  • Unit 5B has 10 cases: five patients and five staff, with two deaths connected to the outbreak.
  • Unit 4E has two cases: one patient and one staff.
• Vernon Jubilee Hospital Level 3 surgical unit has 13 cases: nine patients and four staff, with one death connected to the outbreak.

The latest vaccination numbers for the BC Interior are not yet available on the BC Centre for Disease Control dashboard.
