BC records 1,428 new COVID cases and 8 deaths over the weekend

Health officials reported 1,425 new cases of COVID-19 and eight deaths in BC over the weekend.

Of the new cases, 358 were in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, 805 were in the Fraser Health region, with 99 in Island Health, 67 in Interior Health, and 99 in Northern Health.

There are currently 223 people in hospital with the virus, 63 of whom are in ICU.

To date, 218,726 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in BC, 55,057 of which are second doses.

There are 28 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 variants, for a total of 101 cases.

Of these confirmed cases, 58 are in Fraser Health, 38 are in Vancouver Coastal Health, four are in Island Heath and three are in the Interior Health regions.

Officials also reported two new health care facility outbreaks on Monday, one at Vancouver General Hospital and the other at Kelowna General Hospital.

The deadly outbreak at Royal Inland Hospital has been declared over.

“As community transmission continues, we all need to continue to use all of the layers of protection, to continue to keep to our households only, and to avoid travel unless it is absolutely necessary," said Dr. Bonnie Henry in a written statement.

“No matter what the variant, COVID-19 can spread before someone has any symptoms of illness. This is what makes breaking the chain of transmission difficult and what makes our individual actions all the more important."
