BC surpasses record highs for COVID hospitalizations and ICU patients, reports 1,005 additional cases

Health officials reported 1,005 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, along with six additional deaths.

Of the new cases, 259 were in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, 536 in Fraser Health, 49 in Island Health, 110 in Interior Health and 51 in Northern Health.

There are currently 425 people in hospital, a spike of 93 patients since last Friday, with 127 patients being in critical or intensive care.

A total of 10,081 COVID-19 cases are currently active in BC and 15,877 people are self-isolating due to contact with known cases.

To date, 1,282,091 doses of the vaccines have been administered, 87,970 of which are second doses.

“Spending time outside is important for our physical and mental well-being. But we have to remember that while being outside with others is much lower risk than being inside, it is not without risk," said Dr. Bonnie Henry in a written statement.

“Even if we are outside, we need to stay small and continue to use our layers of protection. This means keeping a safe distance and wearing masks, especially if someone is higher risk for serious illness."

Health officials are expected to make an announcement on BC's current public health orders banning in-person dining and adult exercise classes on Monday.
