Mindfest promises to unveil groundbreaking research in a unique evening event

The Mary Irwin Theatre will come alive tomorrow night with the inaugural MindFest, a unique event that promises to blend cutting-edge psychological research with an evening of entertainment. Organized by a dedicated team from UBC Okanagan, including psychology faculty member Michael Woodworth and three graduate students, MindFest is designed to be both enlightening and enjoyable for all attendees.

Woodworth, speaking on behalf of the organizing team, expressed their excitement about the event. "We are thrilled to bring this event to the community. Our goal is to showcase the incredible research happening at UBCO in a fun and engaging way," he said.

MindFest aims to demystify psychological research, making it accessible and interesting for everyone. The event will feature five different labs from UBCO's psychology department, each presenting their work in a dynamic and competitive format. Topics will range from trust and technology to the effects of psychedelics and cannabis on mental health. Attendees can expect to gain insights into neuroplasticity and social interactions, all delivered in a fun, approachable manner.

"We've structured the presentations to be brief but impactful," Woodworth explained. "Each lab has just eight minutes to captivate the audience and convey their research's significance. It's a fun challenge for the researchers and an exciting experience for the audience."

The competitive aspect of the event adds an extra layer of excitement. Attendees will have the opportunity to vote for their favourite presentation, with the winning lab receiving a specially crafted trophy. "It's not just about the research," Woodworth noted. "It's about engaging the community and highlighting how this work impacts everyday lives."

In addition to the research presentations, MindFest will offer a range of activities designed to appeal to a broad audience. Free catered food will be available, ensuring no one goes hungry while they absorb the fascinating talks. Music will be provided by Ben Klick, an up-and-coming country musician who has graciously agreed to perform in the theatre's foyer after the main event.

Woodworth highlighted the community support that has made MindFest possible. "We've had amazing backing from local organizations. Lakeview Market, for instance, has donated two giant cakes, adding a sweet touch to the evening," he said.

With ticket reservations already in the triple digits, the Mary Irwin Theatre is expected to be at full capacity. However, Woodworth assured that they would do their best to accommodate everyone interested in attending. "If you haven't reserved a ticket yet, don't worry. If there's space, we'll make sure you can join us," he said.

MindFest is free to attend, with tickets available on Eventbrite. For those who decide to come at the last minute, doors will open at 6 PM, and the event will run until 8 PM.

"This is an event for everyone," Woodworth emphasized. "Whether you're interested in psychology, looking for a fun night out, or just curious about what's happening at UBCO, MindFest has something for you."

Save the date and join Michael Woodworth and the UBCO psychology department tomorrow night at the Mary Irwin Theatre for an evening of innovation, entertainment, and community connection.
