Groundhog Day isn’t exactly a drinking holiday.
However, it’s coming up on Monday and Squamish’s Backcountry Brewing recently released a beer that ties in perfectly with the holiday.
It’s named after the classic film Groundhog Day in which Bill Murray relives the same day over and over, always starting with the same quote from the radio DJ when his alarm goes off.
“Okay, campers, rise and shine, and don’t forget your booties ‘cause it’s cold out there!”
In typical Backcountry fashion, the name of the new Nectaron West Coast IPA is that entire quote, with a label depicting the bedside alarm clock and lamp seen in the film.
The brewery says this West Coast IPA is bright, crisp and loaded with character, showcasing a “punchy blend” of Nectaron and Citra hops.

The former provides waves of peace, passionfruit and tropical citrus, while the latter brings its signature grapefruit, zest, lime and juicy orange flavours to the table.
“The result is a clean, aromatic hop profile riding on a dry, refreshing backbone that keeps every sip lively and snappy,” details description of the beer from the brewery.
Look out for this new Backcountry creation, which comes in at 6.5% ABV and 50 IBU, at retailers around British Columbia over the coming days and weeks!
