The 2023 Memorial Cup is just around the corner, however, Kamloops City Council is being asked to provide an additional $200,000 for a temporary elevated platform for TSN broadcasters.
In a report headed to council on Tuesday, city staff say the platform would be constructed at the south end of the Sandman Centre.
“This elevated viewing area is required to create some private suites spaces for Canadian Hockey League officials, sponsor, broadcast and media partners, and individual team executive spaces as well as space for the TSN Broadcast Centre,” says the report.
The need for the platform was not identified during previous facility discussions and became more apparent as the city worked with officials and was brought up during ongoing discussions with CHL and TSN officials and the Kamloops Blazers Hockey Club.
City staff are recommending that council authorize the funds be taken from the city’s Gaming Reserve.
Kamloops was awarded the 2023 Memorial Cup in the spring of 2022.
In addition to this latest upgrade, the city announced in early June 2022 that the Sandman Centre was receiving technical upgrades to meet the CHL’ standards.
This included upgrades to game presentation systems, the video production control room, broadcast cable infrastructure, signage and more. Those upgrades were estimated to cost $940,000.
This year’s cup will begin on May 26 and end June 4.
Council will review this request during the regular meeting on Tuesday.
