Kamloops garage fire leads to warning about aftermarket chargers and batteries

As e-bikes and e-scooters become more and more popular, Kamloops Fire Rescue (KFR) is warning the public about a potential fire hazard that can come with them.

A PSA from KFR this morning warns the public about the dangers of aftermarket chargers or batteries.

It comes after a garage fire that sparked from a wall-mounted aftermarket charger.

“Sometimes the cause of a fire can be hidden in plain view,” a Facebook post from KFR said. “Our investigator didn't have to look very far for the cause of this fire.”

Accompanying the post is a photo of the torched garage, along with four pieces of advice:

  • Don't use aftermarket chargers or batteries.
  • Don't charge a device near combustible objects.
  • Don't charge where it can block an exit from a building.
  • Follow manufacturer instructions for charging.

The post finishes up with a simple plea: “E-Bikes are amazing – we ride them too – but please be careful.”
