A Kamloops middle-school teacher has been suspended after kissing his former student's neck during a celebration back in 2016.
According to a Consent Resolution Agreement published on August 6th by the British Columbia Commissioner for Teacher Regulation, Brett Edward Wasylik was at a restaurant in Kamloops for an "end-of-the-season" celebration dinner with a sports team when he behaved inappropriately with a former student.
The situation occurred on November 12th, 2016 with a student Wasylik had taught. When Wasylik arrived at the restaurant, he noticed the former student working there as a hostess.
Later in the night, Wasylik approached the student when he began to speak to her for about five minutes. During the conversation, he commented on her appearance, mentioning she looked "F***ing hot." In addition to that, he also told her he was awarded MVP for his sports team, recently completed the course work for a Masters of Education degrees, and it was near his birthday so he was out having fun.
Wasylik showed the student two photos from his phone with one being his MVP trophy and the other being a professionally-taken picture of him shirtless. He mentioned that he only showed the photos because they were shown by his team in a year-end slideshow.
During the conversation, Wasylik was observed to be standing very close to the former student, even hugging her at one point. Later in the evening, Wasylik invited the student to join the celebration with him when her shift ended. His conduct made the former student feel uncomfortable.
Finally, Wasylike saw the former student in the hallway when she was preparing to leave work. He offered to walk her to her car, which she declined, though he insisted. The former student was uncomfortable in the situation and tried to delay leaving the restaurant, but eventually, she gave in.
Once he walked her to her car, Wasylik hugged her again and noticed she was uncomfortable. He said to her words to the effect of "I'm not going to kiss you, just your neck," which he did.
While all this was happening, a coworker told the restaurant manager about the situation. As Wasylik walked back towards the restaurant, the manager informed him he was not welcome back in the restaurant.
On November 28th, 2016, SD73 disciplined Wasylik by suspending him without pay for three days and required him to complete a course on professional personal boundaries. He also has to serve another two-day suspension before October 31st of this year.
