A two-vehicle crash on the Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1) Thursday afternoon claimed the lives of a mother and son from Kamloops.
Emergency crews were called to the scene in the 5300 block of Hwy 1, west of Chase, around 3 pm. Police say the crash involved a Mercedes SUV and Honda Civic.
Despite life-saving efforts by first responders, the two occupants of the Honda, a 47-year-old Kamloops woman and her 11-year-old son, were pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Mercedes suffered serious injuries and was transported to hospital for treatment.
"The loss of life in any incident is tragic, and our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of those affected during this incredibly difficult time," said Cpl. Brett Urano.
The RCMP Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service attended the scene to assist with the probe, which remains in its very early stages.
"As this investigation is in its infancy, investigators are working to determine exactly what occurred,” Urano added. “We are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or captured relevant dash camera footage to come forward."
Police promised that investigators “are working tirelessly” to determine the circumstances that led to the fatal crash.
Anyone who witnessed the collision, or those with relevant dash cam footage from the area between 2:30-3:30 pm on Thursday, is urged to contact the Chase RCMP at 250-679-3221.
