City of Kelowna reminds residents to share pathways respectfully during COVID-19

COVID-19 numbers in the Interior Health have looked fantastic lately and it’s definitely made many feel more comfortable getting out and about as restrictions are eased up on.

However, that doesn’t mean that British Columbians can stop social distancing when possible and the City of Kelowna is reminding people to keep that in mind while walking or biking around town.

“We’ve seen record-breaking numbers of people of all ages out walking and rolling on our shared pathways,” said Matt Worona, mobility specialist with the City.

“Seeing our pathways come to life with people walking and biking has been exciting, and the sharp increase in use makes it important to follow a few simple guidelines to keep everyone safe.”

According to the City, many pathways in Kelowna saw as much as a 63% increase in users in May.

Some of the busiest areas include sidewalks and bike lanes along Abbott Street and Lakeshore Road, as well as the Waterfront Walkway and the Okanagan Rail Trail.

In these spots and any other spot frequented by pedestrians and cyclists, the City says that people should be mindful of others, move to the side when stopping and stay to the right, but pass on the left.

Everyone is encouraged to continue doing their part, which includes staying on designated pathways and bike lanes, as all cyclists over the age of 12 should not be riding on city sidewalks.

“The use of shared pathways during a pandemic has been a consistent topic of discussion, and we’ve heard from many residents who depend on pathways not only to get around but for their health and well-being as well,” said Worona.

“We just ask everyone to be alert, be considerate and remember that we’re all in this together.”

The City says it continues to monitor pathway use and the impacts of COVID-19, while reviewing opportunities to support physical distancing in public places.
