City prepping for high water on Mission Creek with heavy rainfall forecast

Kelowna is in for a weekend of wild weather that has city officials watching Mission Creek.

Thunderstorms and significant rainfall are expected to hit the valley on Sunday, leading officials to warn property owners along Mission Creek who have experienced flooding in the past to be prepared.

“The City will be placing sand, sandbags and pre-filled sandbags at the Cook Road Boat Launch (500 Cook Rd.) for property owners who wish to protect their property,” stated a City release.

“Sandbags that were previously dropped at Rowcliffe Park, Sutherland Ave and Burne Ave will remain at those locations but not replenished at this time.”

Residents looking for sandbags (not pre-filled) can also visit the Kelowna Fire Department Station 1 at 2255 Enterprise Way to stock up.

The BC River Forecast Centre will be monitoring flood warnings and issuing advisories, the Central Okanagan Emergency Operations website can also be visited for information regarding flood preparedness.
