Houghton and Abbott active transportation corridors nearing completion

Two of Kelowna’s newest active transportation corridors (ATC) should be ready for the public to take full advantage of by the time warmer weather arrives next year.

Phase two of the Houghton ATC should be done by the end of the year and the final phase is set to be completed in the spring.

This is an especially exciting development for the city, as it’s Rutland’s first link to Kelowna’s larger ATC network.

It helps create a safe link between the Rutland Urban Centre and both downtown Kelowna and the UBC Okanagan campus, along with much more.

Phase two connected the initial stretch of ATC along Houghton Road to Hwy 97 and Enterprise Way, while the upcoming phase three will stretch the ATC from Hollywood Road to Rutland Road.

To the southwest, the Abbot ATC project has extended all the way into the Mission to the soon-to-be-finished Pandosy Waterfront Park.

It provides a continuous path for cyclists and other types of riders from downtown Kelowna to the Mission.

The Abbott ATC included an innovative quick-build section that combined interim materials with existing street space to deliver the project faster and at a lower cost.

“Improving ways for residents to connect throughout the city is a priority, and active transportation corridors provide options to get people outdoors, get moving and get to their destination in safe ways,” said Kelowna’s new mayor, Tom Dyas.

The City invites the public to get involved in the final stage of the Houghton ATC by reviewing the route and even asking the design team questions through this link.
