Several communities in British Columbia set or tied daily temperature records Thursday as late-May heat pushed parts of the province into the mid-30s.
Environment Canada says Kelowna set a preliminary daily maximum temperature record for May 28, with the Kelowna UBCO station reaching 33.5ºC.
The previous Kelowna-area record was 32.7ºC, set in 1995. Records in the area have been kept since 1899.
Vernon also set a preliminary record, with the Vernon Auto station reaching 33.5ºC.
The previous Vernon-area record was 33.2ºC, set in 2005. Records in the area have been kept since 1900.
Pemberton tied its daily record at 34.4ºC, matching the mark set in 2005. Records in the Pemberton area have been kept since 1908.
Trail also tied its daily record at 34.4ºC, matching a record set in 1934. Records in the Trail area have been kept since 1928.
Environment Canada says the records are based on selected historical stations in each geographic area that were active during the period of record.
The agency says the figures may be preliminary or unofficial and do not represent a complete or final report.
