The newest provincial court judge in British Columbia is a Kelowna lawyer.
Clarke Burnett, who spent the last quarter century as a lawyer with Pushor Mitchell, has been appointed to fill the vacancy at the Kelowna provincial court.
His appointment will take effect on Feb. 25, 2019.
Born in Vancouver, Burnett graduated from the University of British Columbia in 1991 and joined Pushor Mitchell in Kelowna the following year.
He initially focused on civil and personal injury litigation before expanding his practice to include both criminal defence and prosecution work for the federal Department of justice in 1995.
The majority of his current practice remains the same, although the federal Department of justice is now called the Public Prosecution Service of Canada.
In B.C., the chief judge determines the locations to which judges are assigned in order to meet the needs of the court.
Interested lawyers apply for the positions and the Judicial Council of B.C. reviews the candidates before making recommendations.
The final appointment is made through a cabinet order-in-council.
