UPDATE: Section of Greenway reopens after creek levels subside

(UPDATE: June 11 @ 1:20 pm) - The Regional District of Central Okanagan has reopened a 1.7-kilometre section of the Mission Creek Greenway.

It was originally closed between the Hollywood Road entrance of Scenic Canyon Regional Park upstream to the Smoothing Stones bridge because of flooding in the area.

After 10 days, the RDCO has decided that creek levels have subsided enough that the trail can now be used once again.

Minor damage sustained over the past 10 days has been fixed by RDCO crews.

Water levels in Mission Creek are still fluctuating, however, which means the underpasses at Gordon Drive and Casorso Road will remain closed for the time being.

(Original story: June 1 @ 12:30 pm) - The Regional District of Central Okanagan has closed a 1.7-kilometre section of the Mission Creek Greenway due to rising water levels.

Communications officer Bruce Smith says the stretch of trail between the Hollywood Road South entrance of Scenic Canyon Regional Park and the Smoothing Stones bridge.

“All other sections of the Greenway recreational trail are still open although the underpasses at the Gordon Drive and Casorso Road bridges remain closed,” explains Smith.

“Pedestrians and cyclists of the Greenway are asked to use caution and only cross Casorso Road and Gordon Drive when it is safe.”

He also asks for motorists to be aware that trail users will be crossing these roads while the underpasses are closed and to use caution while driving.

The RDCO urges visitors to respect the closure signs posted in all of these locations along the Greenway.

Staff will continue to monitor creek levels along the Greenway and in Scenic Canyon.
