It’s the season of giving, but it’s also the season of garbage.
The Regional District of Central Okanagan (RDCO) is urging you to 'create holiday memories, not garbage' this winter.
“There are plenty of ways to give thoughtful low waste gifts,” says Cynthia Coates, the RDCO's supervisor of solid waste services.
“This could include creative gift wrapping using reusable or recycled materials, giving the gift of experiences, sharing meals or treats or tangible gifts that last.”
The idea is to give gifts of experiences rather than more stuff that is often in plastic packaging, needs wrapping paper and could even be a gift that produces more waste when it’s in use.
The RDCO offered up a number of interesting suggestions:
The RDCO says that thoughtful gift giving can "dramatically reduce" the amount of packaging and wrapping that accumulates over the holidays.
It can also encourages opportunities to create new beloved holiday traditions.
