Wow! Home of the Year finalists are stunning

They all have names befitting their lofty status as Home of the Year finalists at the Okanagan Housing Awards.

They are Urban Retreat by Frame Custom Homes of Kelowna, Papillon by Sunterra Custom Homes of Vernon and Zenith by Bercum Builders of Kelowna.

"Urban Retreat is just that, an eye-catching infill development in the (Kelowna General) hospital district of a main home and carriage house that have modern exteriors, but inside are comfortable and functional and full of architectural details," said Bill Frame.

"Basically, it's a beautiful family home that fits the family's lifestyle."

Papillon (the French word for butterfly) is labelled such for its dramatic cantilevered roofs resembling wings.

Zenith, a modern waterfront mansion, is indeed a zenith, a powerful presence, above the lake.

This week, the Central Okanagan branch of the Canadian Home Builders' Association released its list of finalists in 43 categories for the 29th annual Okanagan Housing Awards.

With COVID dragging on, the awards gala on Jan. 30 will be virtual.

With 43 categories, virtually every size, price point and style of home, renovation, room and design is recognized.

"But the marquee category is always Home of the Year," said Daniel Winer, executive director of the Central Okanagan branch.

"Those homes caught the eye of judges as the best of the best. And the finalists, Frame, Sunterra and Bercum, are all also finalists in other categories, proving they are top of their game."

For instance, Frame is also a finalist for builder of the year, excellence in urban infill (for Urban Retreat), excellence in single-family homes worth $1.5 to $2 million and $2 to $2 million (as a double finalist for both Urban Retreat and Lakeside Haven) and excellence in kitchen design.

Sunterra also got the nod in the excellence in master suite design and excellence in bathroom renovations categories.

Bercum is also a finalist in the excellence for a home worth over $5 million and excellence in master suite design categories.

In recognition that interiors are just as important as curb appeal and construction techniques, there are more categories lauding design for kitchens, master suites, overall interiors, outdoor living space, decorating and styling.

In fact, the inaugural designer of the year category is a nod to the Pinterest generation obsessed with the style inspiration of the social media platform.

The finalists for designer of the year are Hannah Katey Interior Design, Isabey Interiors and Copper+Oak Design.

While she isn't a finalist in the designer of the year category, Natalie Fuglestveit Interior Design is a finalist in six categories for master suite design, excellence in decorating and styling, interior design, residential renovations, kitchen renovations and bathroom renovations.
