AI's role in transforming classrooms: The future of education

Erik Ellefsen, Director of Networks and Improvements at the School of Education at Baylor University, is at the forefront of integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into the educational landscape. With a career spanning over two decades in various educational roles, Ellefsen brings a wealth of experience and insight into how AI can transform teaching and learning.

Adapting leadership and teaching with AI

"At Baylor University, we re-established the Center for School Leadership to focus on improving educational leadership and promoting student success," Ellefsen explains. This initiative is part of a broader effort to adapt to new technologies and methodologies that can enhance the educational experience.

Ellefsen manages the Christian Leadership Transformation Project, which aims to equip educators nationwide with the tools and knowledge to improve schools and promote student success. His extensive background includes roles as a teacher, coach, consultant, dean of academics, principal, grievance chairman, and leader in the ed-tech space.

Measuring success with collective teacher efficacy

One of the key metrics Ellefsen uses to gauge the effectiveness of educational initiatives is collective teacher efficacy. "We have research on collective leadership that is tied to greater teacher efficacy," he notes. "By driving collective leadership, we can drive efficacy and ultimately improve student outcomes."

Ellefsen highlights that collective teacher efficacy is the number one driver of student outcomes. This metric underscores the importance of collaborative efforts among educators to foster a supportive and effective learning environment.

Leveraging AI for personalized learning

Ellefsen envisions AI playing a crucial role in personalizing education and freeing teachers to focus on meaningful engagement with students. "AI has the potential to change how we do teaching and learning," he asserts. "It allows the teacher to be a great facilitator of learning and a guide in the relationship, enabling students to personalize their learning and dig deeper into their interests and strengths."

He emphasizes that AI can help tailor the educational experience to each student's unique needs, allowing for more individualized instruction and support. This approach can enhance student engagement and achievement by addressing specific learning styles and preferences.

Challenges and concerns with AI integration

Despite the promise of AI, Ellefsen acknowledges the challenges and concerns associated with its implementation. "We need to ensure that students are doing authentic work that leads to wisdom, discernment, and character," he emphasizes. "It's important to address the potential biases in AI and prevent educators from becoming overly reliant on technology."

Ellefsen points to a recent example from the Los Angeles Unified School District, where an AI chatbot meant to serve as a tutor was shut down due to concerns about data privacy and control. "This highlights the importance of safeguarding student data and ensuring that AI tools are used responsibly," he explains.

The importance of human connection in education

Ellefsen also highlights the importance of human connection in education. "COVID-19 taught us that we need people, mentors, guides, and classmates," he says. "The challenge is to pair the technological with the human, creating a life-giving environment for both teaching and learning."

He believes that while AI can enhance the educational experience, it should not replace the essential human elements that make education meaningful. "The goal is to create a balanced approach that leverages the strengths of both AI and human interaction," Ellefsen concludes.

Looking ahead

Ellefsen remains optimistic about AI's potential to revolutionize education, provided it is used thoughtfully and responsibly. "We have the opportunity to rethink and reimagine education in significant ways," he says. "AI amplifies this potential, allowing us to run towards a future where teaching and learning are more personalized, effective, and fulfilling."
