Ethan Katzberg is a world champion and he saved his best for last.
The Nanaimo hammer thrower trains in Kamloops and he has been on a hot streak recently, with it all leading into winning the gold medal at this year’s World Athletics Championships.
The 21-year-old athlete set a personal best at nationals in July with a throw of 78.73 metres to claim the Canadian championship.
This past weekend, in qualifying at worlds, he mustered a 81.18m throw, a new personal and Canadian best. And the very next day he bested himself, with a throw of 81.25m to win the gold medal.
Katzberg became the first-ever Canadian men’s hammer thrower to medal at the world championships.

His throw of 81.25m is a personal and national record. To add a cherry on top of the win, Katzberg is the youngest men's hammer throw champion ever.
This was his debut at the World Athletics Championships and he beat out 2020 Tokyo Olympic champion, Wojciech Nowicki of Poland.
The world will get to see a lot more of Katzberg over the years as he is only beginning to make a name for himself.
