One of two snowmobilers was killed after the pair triggered a slab avalanche in northern BC last week.
The fatal incident happened near Johanson Lake in the Omineca Mountains, around 235 kilometres northwest of Mackenzie, BC, around 5 pm on Tuesday, April 14.
The slide fully buried one of the two snowmobilers, while the other ended up on the surface.
“The subject on the surface initiated a search, but was unable to locate the buried subject,” an Avalanche Canada (AC) report explained.
They used a satellite messaging system to call a nearby recreational snowmobile camp for help and a second group arrived on scene around 25 minutes after the incident.
The group was able to locate and excavate the subject who was reportedly buried around 1.8 metres deep, but sadly they did not survive the incident.
According to the AC report, the slab had a width of 170 metres and ran for 650 metres with a crown depth of 50 centimetres.
Ten people have died in BC avalanches since the start of 2026.
