Criminal charges laid in connection to Hwy 97 crash that killed BC teens

A 17-month investigation has led to criminal charges being laid against a 21 year old who was involved with a fatal collision near Chetwynd last year.

According to police, the crash happened shortly after midnight on April 7, 2024, on Hwy 97 at Wabi Hill.

It resulted in the deaths of a 19 year old from Dawson Creek and a 15 year old from Chetwynd.

The BC Highway Patrol forward the results of the investigation to the BC Prosecution Service, which led to charges being laid against Jaden Christopher Cardinal of Fort St. John.

The 21 year old is facing two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and two counts of impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing death.

His next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 27, 2026, in Dawson Creek.

The BCHP will not be releasing any further details about the investigation as it is now before the courts.
