Possible first case of Chronic Waste Disease being investigated after police find ill deer in northern BC

The province's first possible case of Chronic Waste Disease is currently being investigated after police in northern BC had to deal with an ill deer earlier this month.

According to Hudson's Hope RCMP, on Oct. 10, officers observed what they thought was an injured deer along Dudley Drive. Upon locating the deer, it was found that the animal was unable to stand and acting in an unusual manner.

Police determined that the deer had not been struck by a vehicle and it was not attacked by another animal.

Because of the deer's condition, it was humanely put down by local Conservation Officers. Now in possession of the COs, they are having it tested for CWD.

At this point, there have been no positive cases of CWD in the province. Police noted that the animal displayed many signs of the virus.

NowMedia will add to the story when test results are available. For more on CWD, click here.
