Life-threatening injuries for young pedestrian hit by pickup in Okanagan crosswalk

Okanagan Mounties say a youth was rushed to hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries after being hit by a pickup truck over the weekend.

The incident happened shortly after noon on Saturday in the intersection of 32nd Street and 30th Avenue in Vernon.

An initial investigation has found that the young pedestrian was crossing 32nd Street when they were struck by the pickup making a right-hand turn.

According to police, the youth was in a marked crosswalk and the truck was turning from the northbound lanes of 30th Avenue into the eastbound lanes of 32nd Street.

“The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and is cooperating with police,” an RCMP statement explained. “The intersection was closed to traffic for several hours while officers conducted their investigation.”

The RCMP’s Integrated Collision Analyst and Reconstruction Service attended the scene and is assisting with the investigation.

Police are urging any additional witnesses, or those with relevant dash cam or surveillance footage from the area, to contact the North Okanagan RCMP at 250-545-7171.
